Kánaak (kaw nock) means "people standing together" in the Tlingit language.
Legend tells us of a Tlingit clan leader who entered a bay as salmon began to group. The salmon began to come out of the water in a frenzy, appearing as if they were standing on their tails together in the cove. "Kánaak!" said the leader. "Just as our people stand together, so do the salmon."
Ká = man ; naak = stand.
The word expresses the uniting of companies Sealaska Corporation and Nypro Inc. standing together for the benefit of our customers. Kánaak Corporation embodies principles developed over millennia and speaks to trade and commerce for which the Tlingit have always been known.
Sealaska is a for-profit Alaska Native corporation representing more than 20,000 Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian shareholders.
